Boys Soccer: Week 1 Courant Blog Ratings

Posted by | Posted on 20-09-2010

I was talking with one coach today about the process of picking an early season Top 10 and how  he basically looked at the page for about 45 minutes trying to figure things out. Boy, I know how he feels. The task of early season polling and rating is by no means a quick endeavor. You sit down and then stare and stare some more. And then you begin the switching of teams back and forth. By the time you’re finished, you’re never completely satisfied but you’ve come up with something. Well, here’s my something. There is a new No. 1 in each ratings and I think you’ll be fairly surprised with some movement on the ratings. The biggest climb belongs to Norwalk and the biggest fall belongs to Staples. Also, Xavier made serious movement into the poll. Matthew Conyers’ Week 1 Boys Soccer Large School Ratings 1. Simsbury (2-0-1)LW: 3 2. Norwalk (3-0-2)LW: 9 3. Glastonbury (2-1) LW: 2 4. Boys and Girls Soccer: Trumbull Upsets Staples

Posted by | Posted on 16-09-2010

Only two games into the new season, Trumbull has provided one of the best surprises of the year.  Trumbull defeated top-ranked Staples 3-1 Thursday to hand the defending Class LL champions its first loss of the new year. The top two teams in the coaches’ poll have now lost before the week is over — Glastonbury fell to Farmington on Tuesday. The defeat wasn’t the only big-time news coming from the high school soccer world on Thursday. On the girls side, Class M defending champs Northwest Catholic defeated Hall 3-2 in the week’s best game. The two rivals played a frenetic back and forth game with Northwest Catholic forcing overtime with seven minutes left. Michelle Medina scored on the Indians’ only opportunity of the overtime after a quick tackle and counter from the midfield. Also worth noting is the fact that Hall’s opening day opponent Glastonbury was delivered the day’s other big time surprise by South Windsor. The Bobcats fought to a 1-1 tie with the Tomahawks. The big headline game in the NCCC ended with the Suffield and Ellington boys teams  playing to 0-0 tie in a possible Class M quarterfinal or semifinal preview. Boys Basketball: New Britain Coach Stan Glowiak Resigns

Posted by | Posted on 12-09-2010

Long time New Britain High boys basketball coach Stan Glowiak has resigned.

That’s a big loss for the Golden Hurricanes. His teams were always competitive and usually won. His career record in 21 seasons was 349-139. “Basketball is a year round position and I wanted to step back and see what is important for me,” Glowiak said.

No one can fault him for that.

Two things he will do is watch his son Brian, as an assistant coach at the University of Hartford; and his younger son Steven, a guard who’s red-shirting at Sacred Heart. Glowiak’s teams were always in the post season. His 2001-02 team lost the Class LL championship to Weaver. He had only two losing seasons.

The Golden Hurricanes were 20-6 last season, losing in the Class LL quarterfinal round to eventual champion Bridgeport Central.

“I’ll miss the players, especially when they come back and talk about what they’re doing with their lives,” said Glowiak, a guidance counselor at New Britain. “I’ll miss the relationships with athletic director Len Corto and principal Mike Foran, great guys, great friends. And I’ll miss running your own program.”Glowiak hasn’t ruled out returning to coaching. But at this stage, “It’s time for me to see what’s out there and enjoy some things more, like seeing my sons in the game,” he said.
